Emotional Support Coworkers: The Real MVPs of the Workplace

Emotional Support Coworkers: The Real MVPs of the Workplace & the Unsung Hero's of Workplace Wellness.

Whether you work from home or in an office, we all have those coworkers who make the workday a little brighter. Sometimes, it’s a human teammate who always knows when to drop a funny meme in the group chat. Other times, it’s a four-legged friend who keeps you company while you answer emails. Let's face it - work can be stressful, but the right support system makes all the difference. Whether its your favourite work bestie who always knows when to send a meme or a four-legged coworker curled up beside you, emotional support coworkers have a bigger impact than we realize.

As an HR professional with almost 20 years of experience, I've seen firsthand how workplace relationships and emotional support systems can transform an organization. A supportive workplace culture fosters higher moral, lower turnover, and increased productivity. Employees who feel valued and supported are more engaged, happier, and more likely to stay in their roles long-term.

At SouthPaw Stickers, we know the value of emotional support coworkers—both the people and the pets—because, let’s be honest, they keep us sane! This is why we just had to design a special "Emotional Support Coworker" sticker.

The Science Behind Emotional Support at Work

It's not just a nice to have - it's science! Studies show that social connections at work improve job satisfaction and performance. Employees with strong relationships:

✔️ Experience lower stress levels

✔️ Are more engaged and productive

✔️ Are les likely to leave their jobs

Having emotional support at work - whether through a trusted colleague or a beloved office pet - also triggers positive physiological responses. It lowers cortisol (that stress hormone that so many people on social media are warning you about!) and boosts oxytocin (the feel-good hormone), helping to create a calmer and more collaborative work environment.

I can think of a number of instances over my career when I was feeling particularly stressed or overwhelmed and after spending a few minutes with one of my colleagues I felt significantly better. They helped me laugh, smile and just generally feel better without even realizing. That is the power of these human connections that so many of us undervalue. Our blog last week spoke about embodying the mindset of a Pineapple (if you haven't read it - we suggest you check it out!) and one of the messages was about being kind. When we are kind to others, and we build these connections we are helping others with more that we often realize. A kind smile, a compliment, helping someone pick up something they dropped. All these "little' things go a long way!

Why Emotional Support Coworkers Matter for Mental Health

Workplace stress is real, and having a strong support system—whether human or furry—makes all the difference. Emotional support coworkers:

✔️Help reduce burnout by providing moments of joy.

✔️Encourage social connection, which improves mood and engagement.

✔️Make the workday feel less overwhelming by offering support and laughter.

Emotional Support Coworkers - Who are They?

We've talked a lot about Emotional Support Coworkers already so let's get clear on who an Emotional Support Coworker is - both the human and the four-legged variety because we strongly believe that our pet's are also Emotional Support Coworkers, they just might not be on payroll!

  1. The Human Emotional Support Coworker

Every office or remote team has one (or hopefully more!). They’re the person who:

✔️ Knows when you need a coffee break before you do.

✔️ Can instantly lift your mood with a well-timed joke or GIF.

✔️ Sends a “You’ve got this!” message before a big meeting.

✔️ Is always ready to lend an ear when you need to vent about that never-ending email thread.

These coworkers aren’t just good company—they help shape a positive workplace culture. A supportive work environment reduces stress, fosters teamwork, and improves overall job satisfaction. Studies have shown that employees who feel connected to their coworkers are more engaged and productive. So, next time your work bestie sends you a funny meme, know that they’re not just making you laugh—they’re contributing to a healthier, happier workplace.

  1. The Pet Emotional Support Coworker

For those of us working from home, our pets have become the best (and quirkiest) coworkers we could ask for. They may not contribute to meetings (aside from occasional Zoom or Teams cameos), but they provide endless emotional support in their own way:

✔️ Keeping our laps warm during long work sessions.

✔️ Offering judgment-free company when we talk to ourselves.

✔️ Demanding snack breaks that remind us to step away from the screen.

✔️ Giving us the perfect excuse for a midday walk or stretch.

And, of course, they always remind us what’s really important: snacks, naps, and unconditional love.

Pets in the workplace (or in our home offices) aren’t just adorable—they’re also great for mental health. Studies show that interacting with animals can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase feelings of happiness. No wonder so many companies are becoming pet-friendly workplaces!

In fact, we at SouthPaw Stickers aren't the only organizations who believe in the importance of pets in the workplace. Over the last several years we've seen a rise in the number of pet-friendly workplaces around the world. More companies are recognizing the benefits of pet friendly offices as a way to reduce stress and boost employee well-being. Having dogs or cats in the workplace can:

✔️ reduce workplace anxiety and promote relaxation

✔️Encourage social interaction among employees

✔️Increase retention and job satisfaction.

Some companies have even had "puppy days" where they bring in multiple puppies for the employees to interact with. This serves as a great wellness benefit o the employees while also giving the puppies some much needed socialization. I don't know about you but I'd love to be in a room full of puppies right now.

How Companies Can Foster a Supportive Culture

Whether your emotional support coworker is a fellow human or a furry friend, businesses can play a role in fostering a positive and uplifting work environment. Here's how:

✔️Encourage workplace friendships through buddy systems and mentorship programs

✔️Create wellness initiatives that include mental health resources and flexible work options

✔️Recognize and celebrate emotional support coworkers - both human and pet versions!

By prioritizing workplace culture, emotional well-being, and meaningful connections, businesses can create happier, more engaged, and more productive teams.

A Special Shoutout to Jax, SouthPaw Stickers’ Chief Happiness Officer!

We are all about practicing what we preach and couldn't provide a recommendation on how companies can foster a supportive culture by recognizing and celebrating emotional support coworkers - both human and pet versions without recognizing our SouthPaw Stickers emotional support coworker. Yup - we need to give a shout out to Jax—our Chief Happiness Officer! He’s always there for quality control (mostly sniffing stickers) and makes sure I take breaks for belly rubs and fresh air. He may not design stickers, but he definitely keeps the creativity flowing!

Celebrate Your Emotional Support Coworker!

Whether your support comes in the form of a work bestie or a furry companion, take a moment to appreciate them today! Maybe it’s a quick thank-you message, an extra belly rub, or even a fun sticker to show them how much they mean to you.

So, let’s give a round of applause (or a scratch behind the ears) to those who make work better every single day.

Do you have an emotional support coworker who keeps you going? Share your stories in the comments—we’d love to hear about them!
