The Power of "And": Balancing Business, Career, and Motherhood

Updated: Jan 7

When I first started SouthPaw Stickers, I knew I was stepping into the world of entrepreneurship while still fully committed to my career as an HR professional and, most importantly, being a mom. Many people assume success requires choosing one path, but I embrace a different mindset: It's not "or," it's "and." I can be an entrepreneur and an HR professional and a great mom!

I’m sharing what has worked for me because I know I’m not alone in juggling multiple roles and responsibilities. Many of us—whether we’re parents, professionals, or entrepreneurs—struggle with the idea that we must sacrifice something to succeed at another. With the right mindset and systems, you don’t have to give up one part of your identity to thrive in another.

The Importance of Mindset

I won’t sugarcoat it; this journey hasn’t been easy. Shifting my mindset took work, and even now, it’s far from perfect. I still fall into old habits, wrestle with self-doubt, and have days where balance feels impossible. However, what I can say with certainty is that the effort is 100% worth it. It feels incredible to have my business out in the world and to share my passion with others. It’s difficult to describe the feelings, but I can assure you that it is so worth it.

Overcoming the Comparison Trap

In today’s social media-driven world, it’s easy to fall into the comparison trap. We measure our success, businesses, and even lives against curated versions of others online. So much time is spent trying to keep up and worrying about others’ opinions that we unintentionally hold ourselves back from living fulfilling lives. Overcoming this fear of judgment was one of my biggest personal hurdles.

My goal is to show you that you can build a business, grow a career, and be fully present for your family—all at the same time. One commitment I made when starting SouthPaw Stickers was to be authentic in my journey. That’s why I’m sharing what has worked for me. If even one piece of advice helps you move toward your goals, it's worth it. While my system may not be perfect for everyone, I hope you find strategies or even just encouragement to pursue your dreams alongside all your responsibilities.

The Key to Balance: Prioritization, Time Management, and Grace

Balancing a full-time career, running a growing business, and raising two kids isn't easy, but it's possible with intentional time management. My approach is built around a few key strategies:

  1. Family First: My kids and family always come first. I ensure their needs are met, and once they’re settled—whether it's after bedtime, during homework time, or on weekends—I shift my focus to my business.

  2. Maximizing Pockets of Time: Running a business doesn't require huge, uninterrupted blocks of time. I've learned to be productive in small pockets, whether it's responding to messages in the car, brainstorming ideas during lunch breaks, or working on designs after the kids go to bed.

  3. Calendar Integrity: Scheduling is everything. I plan my week in advance, ensuring each aspect of my life receives the attention it deserves. Time-blocking helps maintain structure, and I stick to my schedule with discipline. If something is on my calendar, I treat it as a commitment. This ensures every part of my life—family, business, and career—gets dedicated focus without feeling chaotic. I use a planner to keep organized; the right side of the daily entries is for business-related actions and tasks, while the left side is for career and personal appointments.

  4. Content Planning & Automation: To streamline my business efforts, I batch create content for social media and use scheduling software. This allows me to maintain consistency while leaving room for flexibility. Pre-planning posts means I don’t have to scramble for content, freeing up time for creativity and growth. In fact, I'm writing this blog post at 8:33 PM on Sunday, March 9th, but none of you will see it until March 20th when it's posted. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest all have built-in scheduling tools that allow you to pre-schedule content from one place, except for LinkedIn and Pinterest, which require separate scheduling through their tools.

  5. The Importance of Passion & Purpose: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that when you're working on something you truly love, it doesn't feel like work. SouthPaw Stickers is more than a business; it’s a passion project that aligns with my purpose. Because of that, I find ways to make it happen. If something is truly important to you, you'll find the time, whether it's early mornings, late nights, or in between responsibilities. Prioritizing your dreams makes them a reality.

  6. Giving Myself Grace: This one is key! No system is perfect, and not every day goes according to plan. There are moments when family needs take priority, work deadlines shift, or business tasks get delayed. Instead of letting those moments derail me, I remind myself that balance isn't about perfection—it's about flexibility and resilience. Some days focus more on family; others focus on business, and that’s okay. What matters is the long-term commitment to everything that matters most. When life happens—and it inevitably will—I give myself the grace to adjust. Maybe I don't get all my social media posts out that week, and that’s fine. The world isn't going to end because of it. Life is going to life, so give yourself the grace, acceptance, and love to flow with the current.

Embracing the Entrepreneurial Journey

Building SouthPaw Stickers while managing my career and family has been a journey of growth, learning, and adaptability. Some days are overwhelming, and others feel perfect. But what keeps me going is the belief that I am creating something meaningful and fulfilling—not just for myself, but also as an example for my kids. They can pursue their dreams without limitation. I'm so grateful for this journey, grateful for the challenges faced, and grateful for the people who have supported me.

You Can Do Both (or More)!

If you've ever felt like you had to choose between career, passion, and family, I'm here to remind you: YOU DON'T HAVE TO PICK JUST ONE. With the right mindset, priorities, and systems, you can build a life that embraces everything you love.

Do you have any tips or tricks on balancing multiple roles? I’d love to hear your thoughts and strategies. Let’s share and inspire each other in the comments!
